Seven Things We Love This Week

Since Five Things took a vacation last week, we’re back this week with a little extra helping of things we love.

1) Some of the best moments of our week came courtesy of the Bon Iver show at the Long Center on Tuesday evening. Justin Vernon and his nine backing musicians blew us away in every way, including sonically, which was a little surprising for a group known more for its quiet moments than its loud ones. From the hard-charging rock version of “Blood Bank” to the softly sad a capella “Re: Stacks,” hearing the music of Bon Iver live gave us chills. And we quickly found ourselves impressed with opening act (and Vernon’s ladyfriend) Kathleen Edwards. In addition to a number of songs from the band’s latest album, Bon Iver played “Beth/Rest,” the ’80s-tinged closer that a clever filmmaker used as the perfect soundtrack for some sad childhood movie favorites:

2) Of course, as in every fortnight ever, Dave Grohl spent the last two weeks being awesome. Not only did he totally blow away “Conan” when he and the rest of Foo Fighters performed their latest single “Walk,” the bombastic closing track from Wasting Light, but he also channeled Don Henley to Will Ferrell’s Stevie Nicks to perform the easy-listening staple “Leather and Lace” for an LA benefit:

3) And speaking of Stevie Nicks, our favorite modern-day Gypsy Queen Florence Welch released another new track from her upcoming second album, which will be released in November. You can listen to the soaring “Shake It Out” below:

4) It’s not an understatement to say that Cameron Crowe’s movies curated our childhoods. From “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” to “Say Anything” to “Singles” to “Jerry Maguire” to “Almost Famous,” Cameron Crowe has always known how to add the perfect song to make the perfect moment. The trailer for his upcoming “We Bought a Zoo” employs Tom Petty perfectly (again!):

5) Wouldn’t living in a zoo be the best? Especially if the animals included the baby animals at Fuck Yeah Baby Animals or these Animals Talking In All Caps. And, of course, Maru:

6) In addition to the return of Pumpkin Spice Lattes, September also heralds the return of Fall TV. Huzzah to new shows! While we celebrate the new, we should also take a moment to reflect on our common past, or, in other words, how do the love triangles from the TV shows of our youth fare today? Pajiba explores this topic to entertaining results. We’ve already discussed our thoughts on Dean vs. Jess vs. Logan, but which side of these triangles do you come down on?

7) And finally, IT’S ACL WEEKEND!!!! We will see you tomorrow down at Zilker Park (we’ll be the ones in the sunglasses), but in the meantime, whet your appetite for Fitz and the Tantrums’ Friday set with this live performance of “Don’t Gotta Work It Out” recorded on a boat on the canals of Amsterdam:

  • I like that track by Florence Welch too!

  • Best show-love-triangle article ever!

  • Which begs the question – which is the best TV love triangle ever?

  • Well, Buffy Spike and Angel, of course. Advantage? Spike. :)

  • I know I’ve only watched the first four season of Buffy and that this is blasphemy, but I’ve yet to find myself invested in either the Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Spike relationships. I did however like Xander with Cordelia, so I’m not sure what that says about me.

  • Oh you will be. You WILL be. Please watch it! Xander and Anya are also better together than Cordelia and Xander, and I really liked those two together.

  • I have a hard time liking Anya because that actress will always be Susan from “90210: Original Flavor” to me (even when she popped up in “Life Unexpected”). I did like that actress in “Timer” though.

  • [...] movies will be coming out in the next four weeks, but one of the ones we are most excited about is Chickster favorite Cameron Crowe’s “We Bought a Zoo,” which comes out Dec. 23. The Hollywood [...]
