Five Things We Love This Week: Girl Power Edition!
1) The Princess of Power, “She-Ra,” has come to Netflix Instant. We are looking forward to spending a Saturday morning with her adventures, although sadly, O’Husband claims that when he watched her brother “He-Man” recently that it didn’t hold up. Maybe mimosas will help.
2) Our favorite local female superheroes, the Texas Rollergirls, will be showing their stuff during a bout between the all-star Texecutioners and the Denver Roller Dolls on Saturday, July 16, at the Austin Convention Center. Get your advance tickets for $12 here!
3) We finally got our grubby little hands on a copy of Tina Fey’s “Bossypants,” and holy crap, it it funny and genuine and even touching and you should be reading it right now. Although we do suggest not reading it in public unless you don’t mind looking like the crazy laughing lady.
4) Check out the next generations of Tina Feys in The Mary Sue‘s list of Seven Underrated Female TV Comedy Writers to Watch. In addition to the AWESOME Mindy Kaling, the list includes several women who have written for one of our favorite shows, “Community.” Emily Cutler penned the “Modern Warfare” episode, which is arguably one of the best half hours of television of the past few years.
5) We admit to being suckers for romantic comedies as much as the next girl, but being aware that things that seem romantic in movies can actually veer on the creepy/dickish/stalker side in real life can save you a lot of embarrassment/jail time. Check out Cracked‘s hilarious commentary on Five Romantic Movie Gestures That Were Actually Dick Moves.

The secret to enjoying “She-Ra” is not mimosas. It’s a sugar high from eating several bowls of cereal, all the kind your mom never wanted you to have as a kid.
Community is such a great show. I didn’t realize the paintball episode was due to a lady, that is definitely one of the best episodes!
I love She-ran! I used to have the outfit, and the cape, and the mask and the sword. I was five.
Haha! You’re totally right about the sugar, Cynthia! I wish the Alamo would do another girlie Saturday cartoon morning.
And it looks like ladies also wrote the Goodfellas-chicken fingers episode, which is another one of my favorites. Awesome!
I’ve always found the romance in Beauty and the Beast disturbing, but I’m really surprised they didn’t dissect Twilight. Stalking and emotional abuse everywhere.
I didn’t know the old Cracked magazine was now a website. Cool!
Are any of you chicksters in love with the new song from Ximena Sariñana? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF6wBFh3BII For me, she’s moved atop Meiko to the top of my list of favorite cute chick-power songs.
Thanks for the tip Doug! I haven’t heard of Ximena, I’ll have to check her music out.
Thanks, Doug! I’ve never heard of Meiko either, so now I have two new artists to check out!
Hope you enjoy. “Girls With Boyfriends” and “Under My Bed” are 2 catchy Meiko songs. I’m surprised you haven’t heard of her. Shelby and Cynthia – Do you like the Weepies? I love their 2010 album, Hideaway.
Doug, I am a huge fan of the Weepies! I even like playing some of their songs on guitar. I tried to get tickets to see them live in Austin at Momo’s but they sold out too fast.
