He Said/She Said: X-Men: First Class

O’Husband and I caught a sneak peek of X-Men: First Class and thought we’d share our thoughts in case you were thinking about seeing it this weekend.

HE: In 2000, the first X-Men ushered in this new wave of superhero movies. You’d think that with more than a decade of practice, Hollywood would be consistently hitting it out the park with comic book movies. For me, X-Men: First Class was really fun, but I’m getting to where I want more from these movies than just fun. That being said, I enjoyed it, and I want to see it again, but is it wrong to want more?

SHE: I thought it was groovy. I think Michael Fassbender should be in every movie. And January Jones should be in no movies. I can’t decide if she is a bad actress or if my feelings about Betty Draper have bled into real life.

HE: I just wish Fassbender had better things to say. I have a bad feeling upon rewatching it, there will be lots of cringeworthy moments (a la rewatching Iron Man). That will be probably be true for Thor too. What comes to mind specifically is the first scene in which we are introduced to a young Charles Xavier and Raven. “You’ll never have to steal again.” Passable dialogue for a comic book movie, but is it wrong to want more?

SHE: To me, this was more fun than Thor or even the first three X-Men movies. I loved the ’60s setting, and i loved what we got of McAvoy and Fassbender together, but I wish it could have been more and better developed. I don’t think I felt as invested in their friendship as they wanted me to. I would have loved a whole movie just about Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr.

HE: Yes, I know it’s called First Class, but who gives a crap about the kids? Not me. I would much rather watch Erik and Charles play chess for two hours. And that’s not sarcasm.

SHE: Yeah, Katniss didn’t fare too well, but it’s probably not her fault.

HE: Overall, I feel the same way I felt about other Matthew Vaughan movies. They’re cool and fun, but I just don’t give a shit. But, I have to say, they used their one F-bomb (for a PG-13 rating) perfectly. I had a good time with it, and I’m sure you will too, but again, is it wrong to want more?
