Weekly Radar Report
This week there’s lots of great musical acts happening all over town! Here are a few events that should be on your radar:
Recap: Did you miss the University of Texas at Austin’s Textiles and Apparel Fashion Show “Innovation” last Thursday? Find some great shots of the 96 original designs shown here.
Monday, April 25 – Okkervil River will play a last minute show on Monday night at Scoot Inn, promoting their new album I AM VERY FAR slated for release on May 10 (sorry, tickets are now sold out). Bill Callahan of Smog fame will also be playing his usual gig at Mohawk at 8 pm, tickets are just $13-$15.
Tuesday, April 26 - Geeks Who Drink is a homegrown Pub Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK. Here are some of the regular weekly events they have planned in the Austin area at some of our favorite Chickster hangouts. There’s Opal Divine’s Freehouse Tuesdays at 8 pm, Highball on Wednesdays at 7 pm, or Nomad‘s on Thursdays at 8 pm. Quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television. Curious? Play a sample round here. As pop culture junkies, Chickster needs to gear up a team stat!
Wednesday, April 27 – Pecha Kucha’s #11 takes place at Seaholm Power Plant, from 8:20 pm – 10:20 pm. Speakers include such varied notables as Dana Friis-Hansen, the Austin Museum of Art’s executive director, burlesque dancer Jori Lodes, and trailer food blogger, Tiffany Harelik.
Flogging Molly, the seven-piece Irish-American Celtic punk band from L.A., is also playing what’s sure to be a high energy outdoor show at Stubbs. Tickets are $30.
The Alamo Drafthouse and Austin Parks Foundation are bringing Movies in the Park to Republic Square Park, and will be playing the time honored classic Casablanca for free at dusk.
Thursday, April 28 – Antone’s presents Battle of The Bands, benefiting the worthy Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Tickets are just $5 before 10 pm, and the show kicks off at 7 pm. Indie rock band The Black & White Years will be performing an after-show at 11:30 pm.
Plus, Shady Grove’s Unplugged at the Grove is back again with Austin’s Quiet Company. Last year the band released Songs for Staying In and have since been featured on several television programs. Their song “How Do You Do It?” was added to rotation of KGSR, KUT, and KROX, the first unsigned local band to ever achieve rotation on all three.
Friday, April 31 - You’re invited to the Royal Wedding Party at the Highball at 5 pm, and naturally, your best formal attire is encouraged. They will be serving up tasty British specialties including High Tea, so you can feel just as elegant and refined as the Queen herself. There will also be a bouquet toss, scones, and lots of pomp and circumstance.
Saturday, April 30 – Eeyore is celebrating his 48th birthday at Pease Park from 11 am until dark. Admission is free, but all food and drink sold goes to raise funds for non-profit groups in Austin. Don’t forget to wear a costume! Eeyore’s Birthday Party began in 1963 as a spring party and picnic for UT students, but continues today as one of our favorite hippie fests, when all of Austin’s weirdest comes out of the woodwork.
Next week: Mark your calendar! The Pecan Street Festival will take place next weekend on May 7-8.

Sounds like a lot of great stuff going on! And I am SO down for forming a Chickster pub quiz team. O’Husband and I had a blast in a music pub quiz at an English expat cafe in Prague, and I’ve been itching to test my trivia skills ever since.
I’m a geek who drinks.
Ooh, and there is still one week left of Master Pancake mocking The Sound of Music: http://www.originalalamo.com/Show.aspx?id=8149
I love Captain Von Trapp, but I think I love John Erler’s Captain Von Trapp voice even more.
