Texas Rollergirls Rec-N-Roll League Session Begins Soon
“The last time I wore skates, they had Barbies on them,” said one Bliss Cavendar, in the 2009 Derby film, Whip It. What about you? Perhaps the last time you donned a pair of skates was the last time it occurred to you the skate rink was the place to be – in middle school. Ladies, it just might be time to reconsider the rink as a happening hotspot.
The sport of Roller Derby first experienced a grassroots revival in Austin, Texas in 2001, publicized in part by the A&E series, Rollergirls, airing in 2006, that showcased Austin’s burgeoning Roller Derby scene and helped to inspire the formation of hundreds of new leagues across the US. Austin features two female leagues, the original banked track Lone Star Rollergirls and the flat track Texas Rollergirls. For those looking for their debut in derby (and who might not have the innate speed skating abilities of Bliss, aka the awesome Babe Ruthless), the Texas Rollergirls’ rec league might just be for you.
The Texas Rollergirls Rec- N-Roll League is open to any and all women 18 years and older who are not currently skating for any roller derby league. The current session will run from April 17 to July 10, with scrimmages on May 8, June 5, and July 3. Skaters will be categorized into groups, but if you’re a newbie, that means you’ll be in the Primer group, mastering all the finer footwork necessary to get you ready for a bout. Find out more here.
The Primer group will be practicing Tuesdays and Thursday evenings at MYEC (or “The Mill”) in East Austin. Come out to the first practice on April 20, and you may even see a Chickster or two there! Moms, there’s no need to stay home, if you want to get your derby on, you too can be hell on wheels. If needed, there is free childcare available at each practice.
