Netflix Instant Pick of the Week: Dakota Skye

Dakota Skye (2008), was the best movie I didn’t know existed. Have you ever suspected that you can detect when someone is lying? Well this indie film takes the human lie detector idea to the next level. Dakota (Eileen Boylan) not only knows when someone is lying but she can tell exactly what the truth is, to impossible detail. That’s how she knew that when she asked her boyfriend what he did the night before and he said “Not much,” the truth was “Hit on two girls that blew us off for two guys that looked like Abercrombie and Fitch models.” So is this strange superpower a curse or a blessing? Mostly a curse, until Dakota meets Jonah (Ian Nelson), the guy who seemingly never lies. But is Jonah just a blind spot, a nemesis or merely just a pathological liar? And is Dakota a hypocrite, since she’s no more honest than the next person? This movie has an interesting take on human nature and a refreshing acceptance of its limitations, as well as an appreciation for the bravery of real honesty.

  • At first I wasn’t sure I sympathized with Dakota, but then I remembered how much I hated being in high school and her disgusted attitude wasn’t so unforgivable. In fact, it was pretty funny – especially with the subtitle translations of all the lies being told on screen as she rolled her eyes. This was a surprise hit with me, a good coming of age story that doesn’t present teenagers as one dimensional but rather endearing despite their flaws.

  • Finally watched this tonight, and I really liked it, especially the superhero gambit. Strangely, I followed it up with “The Good Guy,” which focused on an unreliable narrator, so truth and lies were everywhere for me tonight.

  • I’ve never heard of “The Good Guy.” Sounds interesting though. Any good?

  • It was OK. It stars Alexis Bledel (Rory from “Gilmore Girls”) and Scott Porter (Jason Street from “Friday Night Lights”) and this guy who looks exactly like Eli Manning. Even though it came out in 2009, it was clearly written before all the Wall Street problems in 2008, so its glamorization of stock trading feels really outdated. It was fun seeing Andrew McCarthy play an asshole boss though.

  • Sounds interesting. I’ll watch anything with Alexis Bledel, except, “I’m Reed Fish” (2006). That looks dumb. Though I seriously have no idea what it’s about, and I just disproved my own theory.

  • Skip “I’m Reed Fish.” If you’re bored, give this one a try. It’s on Instant. It was also cool to see how gorgeous Anna Chlumsky (aka Vada Sultenfuss from “My Girl”) has turned out.
