Five Things We Love This Week

1) Obviously, the thing we love most this week is the brand new trailer for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.” We know what’s coming, but this trailer still gets us all choked up about the heartbreaking deaths in this final installment.

2) If you need to follow up all that epic sadness with something silly, we recommend reading Forever Young Adult’s hilarious recap of the Lifetime movie “William & Kate.” Sadly, we don’t have cable so we won’t be seeing the cheesefest firsthand, but this recap is probably more fun anyway. And some of us might just be staying up late tonight to watch the actual rigamarole live. Don’t judge.

3) The Fleet Foxes’ second album, Helplessness Blues, is full of their characteristic otherworldly harmonies, and even though it won’t be released until May 3, you can listen to the whole album now on NPR.

4) As you can tell by our name, we here at Chickster love all things chick-related, so we were thrilled to see Modcloth’s new Chickadeelightful line. We would eat salads every day if we could eat them off this adorable salad plate:

5) The University of Texas‘ cultural treasure trove, the Harry Ransom Center, acquired literary giant David Foster Wallace’s archives after his death in 2008, and now they’re offering a digital peek into the papers related to his recently released unfinished novel The Pale King. While perusing them, we again felt inspired to dig up a copy of his absolutely perfect 2005 commencement address to Kenyon College. Every time we read it, we feel inspired to be better humans, and with graduation season nearly upon us, we thought it was a good time to pass it along.

Bonus: While we don’t love it yet since we have yet to try it, we would love to hear if anyone has had an opportunity to taste the new Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon Whiskey that we read about on Thrillist this week. According to the article, the distillery is owned by some former GSD&M smarties, adding to the list of potent potables connected to Austin’s most famous ad agency. (Also, President Bartlet once told us that if bourbon is not distilled in Kentucky, it has to be called sour mash. Anyone know if that’s true?)

  • I watched the William and Kate movie on lifetime. It was pretty silly. And rather uneventful aside from the break-up which they only dealt with briefly. I can’t imagine being in a relationship that is a bit on the skids and having to see “Waitie Katie” on the cover of every newspaper. I think it is the only based-on-a-true-story-made-for-TV-movie that the real people were actually more attractive than the actors portraying them.

Legally it can only be called Bourbon if it’s made in the US and meets certain production criteria. There are a lot of people who say that real Bourbon only comes from Kentucky, but I don’t think it’s a steadfast rule. Most the time you hear some one say that something is not technically a bourbon is in reference to Jack Daniels, which calls itself a Tennessee whiskey and goes through a different filtration process than most bourbons.

  • Thanks for the explanation, Jamie. You have much knowledge. I thought that recap of the “William and Kate” movie was hilarious, but it makes me very glad I didn’t sit through that movie. Though I wish I had woken up and seen the Royal Wedding this morning. For those who did, what did you think?

  • Jamie, between your love of The Doctor and vast knowledge of brown liquor, I can’t believe we’ve never met! Thanks for clearing that up about the bourbon rules.

Agreed about the real people being better looking than that Lifetime cast. I watched the Royal shindig this morning, and it was pretty epic. I loved her dress, and I realized that despite all the photos I’ve seen of them over the years, I don’t think I’d ever heard either of them speak much before.

  • OMG How exciting is it that there are new Doctor Whos airing simultaneously here and in Britain!!! I was talking with Cynthia the other day and hopefully I will make it down to Austin in early June so we will have to try to all get drinks together then.

As for the Royal Wedding, words cannot express how badly I want a Phillip Treacy hat now. Even though I would have nowhere to wear such a thing. I will just walk around the house in it talking in a posh accent and pretend I am a British socialite.

  • If you didn’t get up at 5 a.m. to watch the royal wedding, you can see a quick recap of it here: http://royalwedding.yahoo.com/video?nc&vid=25067651,

  • Oh. And then they seem to have the whole video right after…

  • Agreed about the Doctor Who simulcast, but sadly, since I don’t have cable, I still have to wait until the next day to catch it on Amazon Instant. At least it’s not a week or month long delay like it used to be though.

Maybe we should all get Phillip Treacy-esque hats in preparation for getting drinks in June!

  • There’s nothing like a silly hat to give things a nice sense of occasion.

  • [...] making a sales pitch for his book than actually offering insight into the post-collegiate world). One of our past favorite things was the late David Foster Wallace’s famous “This is Water” speech, and as [...]
