Capital City Comedy

Recently I scored free tickets to Capital City Comedy club just off 183 and Anderson to see Christian Finnegan of the original cast of VH1’s “Best Week Ever” fame (and of course also known as the infamous “white roommate” Chad on the “Chappelle’s Show’s” “Mad Real World” sketch). While the venue is tucked away close to the somewhat dubious Big Star Bingo (near the enormous pink gorilla statue) you can’t beat it for laughs. Even with the two-drink minimum for all shows, I really prefer it to downtown’s Velveeta room.

This particular show was hosted by Bryan Gutman, a Cap City regular and 2007 winner of Capital City Comedy Club’s Funniest Person in Austin Award. Bryan warmed up the crowd easily with his entirely Austin-appropriate hipster bit.

Matt Bearden also made a brief but inspired appearance. While I’ve seen his act several times, Bearden, also a Funniest Person in Austin winner back in 2002, never fails to crack me up with his flawless delivery and shockingly honest material. Bearden can be seen regularly at 8 pm Tuesday nights at Cap City with his new show “Punch”.

Finnegan himself was quite hilarious.

But one particular joke that hit rather close to home. “I always have a hard time with people who say they can’t cook,” he says. “I mean, give me a damn recipe and I can knock that shit out. It makes me wonder, when people say they can’t cook is it because they can’t read or just that they can’t follow directions? I mean, seriously, what’s wrong with you?”

Er. I believe in therapy this moment is called “the breakthrough”. Looks like I have to admit it’s not that I can’t cook, it’s just that I dread the grocery store too much to keep my kitchen stocked with ingredients beyond wine, cereal and ice cream.
