When you think of a bar, you probably think of getting up, getting dressed and, well, going out. Not so at Tonic. They probably wouldn’t be surprised if you showed up in your nightgown, fuzzy slippers and all. That’s because Tonic isn’t exactly what you’d call a night out on the town. Especially not for those of us living in the apartment complex Tonic is nestled quite cozily inside. That’s right, y’all. Tonic is actually in an apartment complex–my apartment complex.

Tonic is placed at the front of The Artisan, formerly known as the Jefferson Center, in North Austin. Most people still aren’t quite sure where these apartments are located, so when this happens, I quickly add, “Um. There’s a Subway in there.” This usually rings a bell. “Ooooh that place. That’s so cool!” My apartments are pretty darn cool, if I do say so myself. It’s not only an apartment complex but also a little business center complete with restaurants, a salon, a portrait studio and, now to top it all off, a bar. Why ever leave home, right?

I first discovered Tonic when I was newly married and still 20 years old. Now, if you’re married in Texas and you’re underage, it’s legally okay to drink with your overage husband’s consent.Sadly, it’s up to the establishment and most places would do a mean little headshake at me and tell me their management just wouldn’t allow it. I immediately fell in love with Tonic when they gave me a nod and a big smile. I was in!It’s been a year now, and even though I’m now 21, I’m still madly and deeply in love. The environment is warm and extremely inviting. You’ll be treated like family and served like royalty. There are always fun events taking place, the most recent being Taco Tuesday. (If you’re confused by this, it is what it sounds. You serve yourself a buffet of free taco goodness every Tuesday.) Everyone’s your friend and ready join to join in on the fun. The bartenders are even ready and willing to join in on the picture taking and karaoke that ensues.

What I think I love the most about Tonic is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. There is no facade that this is the place for college students or rowdy newly 21-year-olds to crowd around. And though I am a rowdy newly 21-year-old myself and do love the crazy clubs and upbeat dance joints, Tonic has and always will hold a special place in my heart. It’s my second home and the place where I go to get a good laugh, great drinks and meet some lovely people. If that doesn’t pull you in, the free tacos sure should!
