Free Karaoke at The Highball

Do you ever fantasize about getting one of those snazzy private karaoke rooms for free?

Well apparently, you can!  Monday–Friday from 4:30 p.m.–7 p.m. at The Highball on South Lamar (adjacent to the Alamo Drafthouse) there is a generous weekday happy hour: free karaoke in the private rooms as well as $2 Lone Stars and draft pints and $4 wells.

If you haven’t heard of The Highball yet, it is certainly a place to visit. Envisioned by Tim League, the legendary owner of the three original Alamo Drafthouse cinemas, this is one vintage-inspired location that you won’t be able to get enough of. With seven themed private karaoke rooms, ’50s-style bowling and vintage skee-ball, your evening is akin to visiting another time or even several different decades.

The karaoke rooms range in theme from Disco, Heavy Metal, Country and Psychedelic to Old School Hip Hop, and each includes props that match the theme. The New Wave room, for instance, has Devo hats, a Flock of Seagulls wig and a piano necktie; the Hip Hop room has gold chains and an Adidas track suit.

The bowling lanes are ’50s-era equipment taken from New Orleans’ oldest bowling center—Rock and Bowl—that have been restored to its former and shining glory. There are eight vintage bowling lanes, old-style manual scoring systems and comfortable couches for each pair of lanes face each other, wrapping you and your friends into a private space that makes it very easy to talk with those in the next lane.

The Highball is all about class (a marvel concept for bowling to begin with and an unparalleled experience in Austin), and if you can’t get into one of those karaoke rooms for free during happy, it’s more than worth the usual $5 per hour per person fee.
