Dollhouse Makes a Comeback?

Season 2, Episode 11: Getting Closer
Man I hope for a comeback, because what Joss delivered tonight was such an unfathomable combination of unexpected, heart-breaking, and entertaining that I am going to be even more sad (didn’t know that was possible) that there are supposedly only 2 episodes left in this remarkable series which is starting to remind me of Firefly in more ways than one—yes including Summer Glau and the undeserved cancellation. Speaking of which, who else has noticed Fox campaigning (or more like pleading) to viewers to write letters to Time Warner Cable to keep their shows from being dropped? Well why don’t you stop canceling really good shows like Arrested Development, Family Guy twice, Futurama, Dollhouse, and…the list seems to go on into infinity but soon won’t apparently. Maybe I would if you’d stop being so short-sided that you look at the revenue generated from a show and clobber it before it’s finished generating a good following while leaving mostly crap behind, Fox. Maybe I would write Time Warner Cable if instead of trying to sabotage your own shows, you’d actually give them descent time slots. Until then good riddance to you.
And I’m sure someone else will pick-up the shows I like from your station anyway while simultaneously realizing their value which you’ve been flat-out incapable of up until this point.
But enough about that. The episode was fantastic. The return of the cute nerdy romance between Bennett and Topher (including the nerdy-love theme music) was very satisfying….best line from Topher: “You know I always had a crush on you, even when I thought you were a dude….This is better”; the twist ending that I at least partially expected (but couldn’t help but notice that she shot her on the SIDE of the head. Repairable?) and then the other twist ending which I’m still scratching my head over but am very excited about; finding out what feature they took away from Ballard so they’d have enough “brain-map” room to repair his brain when they turned him into a doll version of himself to save his life; finding out more about the real Caroline. Sigh. Fox you suck.

Series finales of my favorite shows usually make me nervous. For instance, I was a huge fan of “The Shield,” and when it ended a little over a year ago, I spent the whole last episode thinking: “There’s only 40 minutes left—how are they going to finish it in only 40 minutes?! Wow, what a great scene! Now there’s only 30 minutes left—how are they going to tie everything up in only 30 minutes?!!” etc. The same thing happened as I watched the last episode of “Angel.” (Both shows had fantastic finales, by the way.) “Dollhouse” will be no different.
I’m really curious as to how they’re going to resolve everything in only 2 episodes, especially since they seem to have so much ground left to cover. They still need to take care of the whole Dollhouse sabotage plot, uncover the remaining secrets of Caroline’s background, explain their latest major plot twist (at the end of last night’s episode), and somehow resolve the whole Alpha storyline, as well. (By the way, do you know if they’re planning to show the unaired final episode of season 1 once this season has been completed? Because if they don’t, it seems like it would be kind of unfair to viewers. It’s kind of like telling them, “Okay, now if you want to see what happens next, go buy or rent the first season.”)
And speaking of the unaired season 1 finale, it occurred to me after Bennett was shot that I should have seen that coming. Knowing that Topher ends up crazy and all. She’s definitely dead.
Oh, and here’s one problem I had with last night’s episode: I still hate DeWitt. She’s gone from being terrible, to decent, to really terrible, to being an undercover (sort of) good guy. But she’s always been annoying. There were a few times during last night’s episode when she made stupid sarcastic comments after being put in extreme danger (complaining about the blood in the carpet after being nearly shot and complaining about the busted windows after the Rossum team breaks in to get them). It reminded me of the episode in season 1 where she was shot and then proceeded to have a conversation while being treated without painkillers and with no signs of discomfort. Please. I get that she’s supposed to be tough-as-nails, unfazed by danger, etc. But the least she can do is shut up about it, because she’s getting on my nerves. Oh, if only someone would kill her . . .
I agree about show finales. They make me nervous too. In fact, now that you mention it I was nervous during this episode and thinking” They’re moving too slowly! Only 3 episodes left!” And then, of course, the end of the episode was like a glorious speeding train. They do still have a lot of ground to cover, but I have total faith in Joss too!
He’s always given himself wiggle room. Even if it isn’t planned it ends up looking completely planned because of the way he structures his stories. Boyd always seemed strange to me. So comfortable in his role. So unafraid of every situation. So certain about Echo and certain about himself. He was often in scary situations and they never seemed to phase him. I’m not surprised that he might be behind the whole thing. Either Joss had this planned from the beginning or he wrote it in a way so that he could take this route if he wanted. I suspect the ending will be HUGE. And Fox will regret their decision and renew him again. If Fox even exists after this year. Apparently there’s something going on there.
I think they won’t air that last episode. Fox is trying to increase their DVD sales. I’m actually okay with this just because it’ll show Fox how many viewers Dollhouse really has. I bought the DVD. I will buy the next one. I want to support Joss!
I think there’s a very planned and simple reason DeWiit is the unbelievable way she is. But I’m going to wait and see if I’m right….Don’t want to ruin the surprise for those who haven’t guessed it. And I actually love the character of DeWitt and Topher….ha ha ha. I know those are your least favorite! What can I say? I find morally bankrupt sociopaths charming…apparently. But only on TV.
I actually like Topher now, ever since they explained his ignorance of Sierra’s background. One of the main reasons I had hated him so much was because I figured he had to have known that she had been made a doll against her will and that he was sending her to her rapist.
DeWitt, however, is still intolerable (in my opinion). I also became angry during yesterday’s episode when she sent Reed Diamond (her former security agent, I always forget his character’s name) back to the attic after he amazingly breaks out to help them. Sure, Echo agreed that it was his best chance at surviving–but if the guy says he’d rather die than go back to what is essentially a type of hell, then maybe they should respect his wishes! Ungrateful bitch.
I admire your passion! She absolutely is a “bitca.” And yeah that part where DeWitt sent the reformed Dominic back to the attic….That also really bothered me and didn’t make sense. What use is he besides the warning that they’ve already received? They’re already coming for them! Why would they come for them…again? Having someone on the inside is totally useless if your cover is blown!
