Sushi-A-Go-Go is literally on the Go

Seems as though food trailers are really catching on in Austin—from the collection on South Congress to Sushi A-Go-Go, which was last week just east of campus on Manor Rd. (across from Thunderbird Coffee, which coincidentally has $1 Lone Star pints every Thursday), a location that was right next to my work. But the difference between this food trailer and the South Congress ones is that this one actually moves occasionally. You can’t come to expect it to be at the same location permanently, as I unfortunately did, because this one does not necessarily stay put. What’s so appealing about restaurants on wheels? Besides the “cute” factor, I think it’s about wanting what you can’t have. This tiny sushi oasis was great for picking up a reasonably priced and fresh lunch in an area otherwise sushi-dry, but it’s been deemed that this week, the Medical Parkway area is in need of sushi, damn it. But according to Kayo Asazu, the girl behind the cart, this move should be the last until summer.

Each 8-piece roll comes with a free miso soup, which is above decent though unsurprisingly smallish, and the rolls, which mostly come cooked, also include raw and vegetarian options. Rolls are sold until they run out of fresh ingredients and all sushi is made right on the spot when you order it. The seaweed salad is the only item disappointingly small for the price ($3.50) but the sunshine roll ($6) containing salmon, mango and avocado reminds me of a cheaper version of the Hawaii roll at Sushi Nichii. There’s also a vegetarian version of this roll for only $3.50. Vegetarians can get their fix with the vegetable roll ($5), which consists of asparagus, carrot, cucumber, sprout, avocado and green leaf lettuce. Also, where would a sushi place that flirts with the edges of campus be without its own version of the “pandering to local college students” roll consisting of grilled steak, cream cheese and avocado; they refer to it as the Longhorn roll ($5.50). Don’t think Sushi-A-Go-Go is near you? Well, keep a look-out. It may be soon.

Open M–F, 10am–8pm, Sat: 12pm–7pm, or whenever they run out of fresh ingredients, and closed Sundays.

  • Sounds like Sushi A-Go-Go is on a roll! heh

  • Hee hee hee. This reminds me of that Girlmore Girls when Logan hires a rolling coffee cart to follow Rory around and make her starbucks whenever she wants because she’s pissed at him. I wish someone would hire Sushi-A-Go-Go to roll around after me handing me free sushi everytime I feel a sushi craving.
